March 19 marked the fifth anniversary of the first U.S. salvo in the Iraq war, now the second-longest conflict in American history. Hundreds of thousands of service members and vast quantities of materiel weapons, ammunition, personnel support and many other items have been sent to Iraq to support the war effort over those five years. Along the way, U.S. troops have tried to lay the foundation for a better life for the Iraqi people, rebuilding schools, hospitals and basic infrastructure in the face of persistent insurgent attacks.
